Apple’s Rumored Smart Home Display Might Echo the Iconic iMac G4 Design

Apple is reportedly working on a new smart home display that could draw inspiration from the iconic “lampshade” design of its early iMac G4. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, the upcoming display is expected to be a lower-cost device, abandoning any robotic features for a simpler, retro-inspired aesthetic.

The device, anticipated for release next year, will feature a square screen positioned above a compact base that subtly echoes the circular bottom of the iMac G4—a beloved model from Apple’s early 2000s lineup. This design could give it a nostalgic feel, while potentially incorporating speakers to combine functionality akin to a HomePod with an integrated display. It would allow for convenient smart home controls and could be used for tasks like setting timers, playing videos, or even FaceTime calls.

Gurman has previously suggested that Apple’s new smart home display may be targeted at the more economical end of the market, offering a “affordable” entry into Apple’s home ecosystem, even if he did not speculate on a price. Although it has been suggested in speculations, a more sophisticated model with a robotic arm that would enable the screen to follow users around a room is not anticipated to be released until at least 2026.

The new smart display will reportedly support custom versions of popular Apple applications, such as FaceTime, Calendar, and Notes. It could also introduce Apple Intelligence integration, a feature currently absent from Apple’s existing smart home lineup. Furthermore, the screen may be able to provide video streaming and FaceTime calls in addition to smart home control capabilities. Because of its built-in speaker, it might possibly be a hybrid gadget that combines the features of the iPad and HomePod.

For fans of the iMac G4’s distinct style, this rumored device could be a delightful addition to the kitchen or countertop, perfect for daily tasks while invoking a bit of Apple nostalgia.
